#12 “Shopping at Masten in uptown Denver feels a little like visiting a friend’s home. It’s wedged in a block of East 17th Avenue that was filled with flophouses when owner Reed Masten opened his doors in 1986. At the time his only concern was finding cheap space in which he could manufacture gilded frames.
The neighborhood has since blossomed, and he has turned to custom framing and selling luxurious home accessories. Today tin cowboy pendulums giddyup along one side of his work table, while blood-red glass vases and spiral-stemmed martini glasses sparkle on the other. The mind-boggling assortment of art objects have one thing in common – all appeal to Masten and his partner.
Belo, his Portuguese water dog, makes himself at home in the store, and Masten sends buyers back out into the world with a thoughtful “thank you”, a little gourmet chocolate bar.”
